Divorce is stressful enough without having to deal with all the side effects that come with the process. One of these side effects is that a support network of friends and family is often lost when a marriage is dissolved, so it is important that divorcee will find time to maintain social interactions.

There are two reasons why other relationships suffer when a couple decide to go their separate ways compiled with a family law attorney:

1. Friends and family members feel the need to choose sides and can’t always maintain a relationship with both parties.

2. The divorcee finds themselves in a position where their divorce is the only subject they can focus on and this can result in friends and family members tiring of the relationship and avoiding contact.

However, it is essential to maintain external relationships with others to help deal with the stress involved with divorce. Being able to vent and talk to others about the divorce and the post divorce stress can alleviate the symptoms.

There are a few ways in which relationships can be maintained:

1. Understand that it will be unlikely that all past relationships will be able to stand the stresses of divorce. People soon find out who their real friends are and these are the relationships that need to be nurtured.

2. Maintaining a relationship means having contact with people who provide support as often as possible. The days when depression and an inability to cope become overwhelming are when a divorcee should reach out to friends and family.

3. Keeping the divorce talk to a minimum is essential. At first, people will want to hear about the divorce and will take the time to listen and sympathize. Eventually, they will tire of the same conversation and will start avoiding contact.

4. See a therapist. Therapy allows a safe environment where talking about the divorce and feelings as much as possible is encouraged. The process can also help determine whether normal stress is the issue or if a more extreme issue such as Post Divorce Stress Syndrome (PDSS) is in play.

PDSS is much like Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) that affects mainly soldiers returning from the front line but can be experienced by any person who has been through a traumatic event. The symptoms, as well as the treatment, for PDSS are similar to PTSD.

5. Form new relationships. As old relationships disappear under the stress of divorce, new relationships can be developed to provide a new support system.
